Digital Storytelling –
Storytelling for a New Millennium.
Once Upon a Time…
Digital Storytelling is the incredibly powerful practice of using the tools of digital media to create, record and share stories of individuals or communities. These are “multimedia sonnets from the people” (2007) as claimed by Daniel Meadows the widely renowned promoter, creator and educator of Digital Storytelling. Although they can vary in length, they are generally short video clips approximately two to five minutes long, containing a mixture of images, text, audio narration, video clips and music. The themes explored in Digital Storytelling are often based on personal reflections, but can also include recounting of historical events, places of significance, or issues of community, family and identity.

Just as there are many ways of delivering a story, there are many types of stories that can be recounted. Robin (2008) discusses the various types, particularly focusing on the category of ‘Personal Narratives.’ Some examples of this are ‘Character stories’ that explore how we love, who inspires us and the importance of relationships. This can be compared to ‘Stories about the events in our lives’ which may be adventure stories about travel or accomplishment stories about defining moments in life. From this can it can be obvious that many many aspects of life can be recorded in this manner and the process of digital storytelling can serve many different purposes.
